Be a Safe Sleep Sleuth! Participate in the #SafeSleepSnap Contest on our Facebook page!
October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month. SIDS is the sudden, unexpected death of an infant under 1 year old that doesn’t have a known cause. Other sleep related causes of death include suffocation (when something covers the baby’s nose and mouth), entrapment (when the baby is trapped between two objects), and strangulation (when something presses on or wraps around the baby’s neck or chest). SIDS and other sleep-related causes of death are the leading cause of death for babies 1 month through 1 year of age. In Washington County, 2-3 babies die every year of sleep-related deaths. 75% of those babies were not following Safe Sleep guidelines.
Help keep babies safe by participating in the #SafeSleepSnap contest to raise awareness about following Safe Sleep guidelines to reduce babies’ risk of SIDS!
The ABCs of Safe Sleep: Babies sleep safest Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib for their 1st year.
There are two ways to participate in the contest:
- If you have a baby under a year old, send a picture of your baby following the ABCs of Safe Sleep to the Washington County Health Department’s Facebook page at facebook.com/WashHealth. These pictures will be shared on the WCHD Facebook page. You may block out the baby’s face with an emoji if you wish. You can submit one picture a day. The picture does not have be taken that day.
- The WCHD Facebook page will share images tagged with #SafeSleepSnapContest. Leave a comment correctly identifying what is unsafe in the sleep environment in the picture. You can comment on each image post.
Every picture and comment you submit will count as one entry toward a raffle. You can participate in one or both parts of the contest. The contest will run October 1 through October 31.
There will be a raffle winner every week. Each winner will receive a Safe Sleep kit containing a onesie, a book, and other baby items. After the last week, four prizes will be raffled to all participants and will include a $30 Walmart gift card and either a Bedtime in a Box (one infant, one toddler) containing pajamas, books, toys, a towel, bath wash, an alarm clock, and other bedtime routine items or a Safe Sleep Kit (for infants).
If you have a baby, but don’t have a crib or pack and play and you can’t afford to buy one, contact our Cribs for Kids® program at 240-313-3357.
