Baltimore, MD (Nov. 21, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Health today announced the first cold-related illness death in Maryland for the 2025-2026 winter weather season. The deceased is an adult male in the age range of 30 to 40 years. This incident occurred in Frederick County.
Maryland’s first cold-related death of the year emphasizes the importance of resources and preparedness during the coldest months. To prevent the onset of cold-related illnesses, including hypothermia and frostbite, Marylanders should limit their time outside and wear several layers of lightweight, insulated clothing to avoid exposure to cold weather. Be sure to insulate your toes, fingers, ears, cheeks, and the tip of your nose.
Marylanders in need of warming centers or overnight shelter are encouraged to call 2-1-1 to provide their county location and ZIP code, which will provide information about available locations, hours of operation and accommodations.

Marylanders should use caution while using various heat sources to stay warm. Some heating sources can cause fires, electrical injuries, burns or carbon monoxide poisoning if not installed, operated and maintained properly. Check heat sources to ensure they are safe before use. Install carbon monoxide detectors and never use an oven as a heat source for the home.
