WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN RECEIVING MY FIRST DOSE OF COVID-19 VACCINE?
- Once the first dose of the vaccine is given, you will be asked to sit for at least 15 minutes (30 minutes for ages 6months-5years) before you are able to leave so you can be monitored for any possible reactions.
- You will receive V-Safe program information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that lists potential side effects and information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. You may register for the V-Safe program to document any side effects and receive important updates regarding the vaccine.
- Even after you have received your first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, you should continue to practice preventative measures like washing your hands often, wearing your mask and watching your distance. You are not immune from contracting COVID-19 after receiving the first dose of the vaccine.
WHEN DO I SHOW UP FOR MY SECOND DOSE?
- Both doses are necessary for maximum effectiveness.
- For the two-dose products, you need to get two doses of the vaccine 21 or 28 days apart. We will make sure you are scheduled for your second dose at your first dose appointment.
- It takes two weeks from your second dose for immunity to develop.
DO I NEED A THIRD DOSE OR BOOSTER DOSE?
The vaccines are still working and are highly effective. We strongly urging all eligible Marylanders, including anyone with underlying health conditions or comorbidities, to get a COVID-19 booster shot as soon as possible.
- Third Doses: Individuals with compromised immune systems are eligible to receive a third additional vaccine dose for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Proof of medical conditions are NOT required. Please bring proof of 1st and 2nd doses by bringing your CDC Vaccination Card or by going to https://md.myir.net/ to download or screenshot your vaccination records.
- New Bivalent Booster Doses:
- Marylanders 6 months and older who received their primary series or booster dose of any authorized or approved monovalent COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months ago
- Marylanders 18+ who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months ago
- Proof of medical conditions are NOT required. Please bring proof of first and second doses by bringing your CDC Vaccination Card or by going to https://md.myir.net/ to download or screenshot your vaccination records.
NOTE:
- Ages 6 months and older now eligible for their booster
- Adults age 50 and older and some immunocompromised individuals are now eligible to get a 2nd booster dose at least 4 months after their first booster
- CDC recommends that people ages 6 months and older receive one updated (bivalent) booster if it has been at least 2 months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose, whether that was:
- Their final primary series dose, or
- An original (monovalent) booster
People who have gotten more than one original (monovalent) booster are also recommended to get an updated (bivalent) booster.
